Ear Conditions
Deafness
The most common variety is “sensioneural.” Typically, this type is treated with hearing aids which amplify sound so that it can be heard. It is exciting that this condition can be reversed with medical acupuncture.
The other variety is “conductive” – which could be caused by something as simple as earwax plugging the ear canal or as difficult as missing/malformed conduction bones (malleus, incus, and stapes.) Surgical repair is the treatment.
For sensioneural deafness, early results are showing reversal. Using techniques analogous to those developed to treat macular degeneration (listed below), it appears that hearing is actually improved. The mechanism is not known, but speculation is that the treatment either directly stimulates the acoustic nerve to become more sensitive or works by increasing local blood supply thereby increasing nourishment of the hearing apparatus. A further possibility is that it “frees up” sensory hairs that have become frozen and stiff.
In early results, people improve hearing at the rate of 1-2 decibels per treatment.
